Super Bowl LI is almost here, and with it comes a match-up of two distinctly different teams. The Falcons, making just their second Super Bowl appearance ever, are hoping to walk away with their first ring. The Patriots on the other hand are quite accustomed to this setting as they look for their fifth National Championship – and coincidentally what would be quarterback Tom Brady’s fifth as well.
The good news for us cord cutters is that, like most NFL games, we can watch the big game for free in crisp high-definition since it’ll be broadcast over-the-air on FOX. And if you won’t be at home or you’re unfortunately out of range of your local FOX station, you can stream the game online without a pay-TV authentication.

A Cord Cutter’s History of Watching the Super Bowl
The Super Bowl has a long tradition of being cord-cutter friendly, even way before “cord cutting” was a thing. Here are some interesting over-the-air TV and streaming facts about the biggest football event of the year:
- The first Super Bowl in 1967 was broadcast on both CBS and NBC simultaneously.
- Every Super Bowl has been broadcast one one of the four major networks: ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC.
- CBS takes the cake for most Super Bowl broadcasts at 19, followed closely by NBC with 18, FOX with 8 (including this year’s), and ABC with 7.
- A 30-second ad during the first Super Bowl cost about $40,000. A 30-second ad during last year’s Panthers vs. Broncos match-up? $5,000,000.
- 51 million people tuned into the first-ever Super Bowl.
- 167 million people tuned into Super Bowl 50 last year.
- Super Bowl 46 featuring the Patriots and the Giants was the first SB to be live-streamed online, with 2.1 million people tuning in online. Every Super Bowl since then has had a free live stream option available.
So, whether you’re hoping the Falcons #RiseUp to the occasion on just their second Super Bowl trip ever or the Patriots bring home yet another trophy, it should be a great game. And best of all, we have a variety of ways we can watch it for free without needing cable or any other monthly TV subscription.
